The second quintet of Miles Davis was one of the most innovative Ensembles in the history of Jazz. With pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, double bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, the trumpeter recorded seven important albums between 1965 and 1968: E. S. P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, Filles de Kilimanjaro and Water Babies. In his autobiography, published in 1989, he wrote: "Where I was the inspiration, represented reason and ensured homogeneity in the group, Tony was the fire, the creative spark. Wayne was the man with the ideas, the intellectual planner. Ron and Herbie were our anchors. I was just the leader who had brought them all together. They were young, but even though I taught them certain things, they taught me other things, like the New Thing, the Free… Every night I learned something new with this group.“

Miles in the Sky (alluding to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles) was released on 22 July 1968 and documents the last months of the legendary quintet, but also the great agreement that prevailed between them. Already in the intro of Stuff, the first of the four compositions of the album, Hancock's electric piano points out the close collaboration that was to connect them in the following months. Ron Carter even swaps his double bass for an electric bass in this opening track! It's difficult to talk about rockjazz or fusion, but the postbop of Miles in the Sky doesn't sound like the others. In Paraphernalia the group even plays together with a young guitarist of almost 25 years: George Benson. And Tony Williams often lets you hear almost rocking rhythms. In short, this album, finally re-released in Hi-Res 24 Bit, is a witness to the umpteenth new revolution of Miles…
