Greetings from Portland, Maine, by way of upstate New York. Like so many things, I started this in one place and finished it in another.

You've heard the expression, how we become completely different people every seven years as our cells all replace themselves. It's a lovely oversimplification, of course. The childhood scar on my knee knows better. I was trying to fly a kite without wind, running as fast as I could and looking only upward, when I clotheslined myself across a sliding board at (thankfully) knee level and not neck level. Becoming a new person every several years is maybe more true for artists than for anatomy. It's been seven years since “A Message in the Mess,” my last solo album. And I can feel myself optimistically sprinting again, eyes trained upward in a minefield of sliding boards.
