The Cold War was a deadly game in the depths of the oceans. Nowhere was the contest more dangerous than in the darkened depths of the world's oceans: Far from their homelands, the superpowers spied upon each other at frighteningly close range. More than 20 collisions between American and Soviet submaries are only the tip of the iceberg as far as these secret operations are concerned. The underwater interface was perhaps the most merciless frontier between East and West. This documentary reveals previously unknown information from the military apparatus of both sides, and shows that submaries continue to be an important weapon in the espionage war even today.
Submarine design was revolutionized between 1945 and 1960. Far-reaching changes in hull design, electronic sensors, power plants, and weapons transformed the World War II submarine, a surface craft that could submerge briefly underwater, into the Cold War submarine, a fast, long-range underwater boat that rarely needed to surface at all. Nuclear power was the final step. Nuclear-powered submarines played a major role in the Cold War as underwater ballistic missile launch platforms. They were complemented by fast attack submarines, which kept close tabs on enemy submarines, ready to strike at the first sign of a hostile launch.
But the submarines role was also Cold War espionage, and were used in covert underwater operations. American submarines slipped into Soviet harbors, shadowing their enemies and successfully gathered information from the seabed. The documentary reveals, for example, the implementation of the secret NR-1, a submarine capable of dives from one to one-thousand meters depth; official confirmation of this sub's existence was only given within the last few years. Other documents disclose the risky use of American swimmers in Soviet waters; these brave souls were tasked with shooting close-up photos of Soviet subs or attaching listening devices powered by mini-reactors onto Soviet telephone lines - at 200 meter depths.
This documentary film explores the submarine activities conducted by the superpowers USA and USSR during the Cold War. It details not only the extensive espionage on both sides but also the significant loss of equipment and lives, particularly suffered by the Soviets. The film reveals that the US waged its "secret submarine war" using subtle propaganda tactics, even against allied nations, to further its own interests. Hear previously unknown details from the U.S. and Soviet sides about the underwater espionage both countries were secretly waging during the Cold War.
