The chosen repertoire on the album is Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, recorded 30 June 1983 at the Herkulessaal der Residenz, Munich and Richard Strauss’ Tod und Verklärung, recorded on 17 February 1979 also at the Herkulessaal der Residenz, Munich. For a long time, Tod und Verklärung was the most popular of Richard Strauss’s early tone poems. It contains a wide range of memorable motifs subtly differentiated with the result that its music recurs whenever there is mention of death or transfiguration in Strauss’ later output.

“I looked at it and said, I know the piece!” When Philip Glass visited the construction site of the Itaipú dam on the border between Brazil and Paraguay in 1988, he was overwhelmed. He marvelled at the boldness and inventiveness of the undertaking and the sheer imagination through which humankind was transforming nature. The work “Itaipú”, written shortly afterwards and based on this experience, is a symphonic “portrait of nature” for choir and orchestra, composed in the tradition of minimal music. Philip Glass is a composer of images. Each of his works evokes a multitude of thoughts and ideas that merge and transform as the music sweeps towards its destination. Conducted by Brad Lubman, a renowned specialist for new music, this monumental work unfolds its full effect, creating “a pull from which there is no escape, one blissfully surrenders to the effect.”

Zubin Mehta has had a decades-long artistic relationship and deep friendship with the Munich Philharmonic. Since conducting his first concert with the orchestra in 1987, he has been a regular guest there and in 2004 was named the orchestra's first and so far only "honorary conductor". Twenty years later, the orchestra celebrated this anniversary with the two piano concertos played by one of today's most celebrated and admired pianists: Yefim Bronfman.

The Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68, is a symphony written by Johannes Brahms. Brahms spent at least fourteen years completing this work, whose sketches date from 1854. Brahms himself declared that the symphony, from sketches to finishing touches, took 21 years, from 1855 to 1876. The premiere of this symphony, conducted by the composer's friend Felix Otto Dessoff, occurred on 4 November 1876, in Karlsruhe, then in the Grand Duchy of Baden. A typical performance lasts between 45 and 50 minutes.

The Munich Philharmonic have arguably given more performances of Anton Bruckner’s music than any other orchestra. A great number of Bruckner recordings led by the many legendary conductors that have worked with the Munich Philharmonic are stored in the historical archive of the MPHIL Label including magnificent pieces with Sergiu Celibidache, Christian Thielemann, Rudolf Kempe, Günter Wand and Oswald Kabasta.

As DG celebrates its 125th birthday this year, the label is bringing to light some great recordings from the past for the very first time, having unearthed some hidden treasures in the archives. The second release in the “Lost Tapes” series is a digital-only release of Wolf’s Mörike- and Goethe-Lieder with soloist Thomas Quasthoff and Christian Thielemann conducting the Münchner Philharmoniker.
